What does a regular week in FLEG look like?

On Monday evenings, we have our General Body Meetings (GBMs) where current members, leadership, and older members participate in a thoughtful, in-depth discussion of leadership values. For one hour at a given time during the week, FLEG members will have a committee meeting. Some committees have events and you may meet up with your FLEG mentor sometime during the week, as well. However, it depends on how much you commit to FLEG.

Between General Body Meetings, committee meetings, work outside of the committee, mentorship meetups, and the events of various committees, expect to spend approximately 3-8 hours per week on FLEG-related matters. On average, a FLEG member would spend about 3-5 hours per week, but your commitment to FLEG is as much as you make it to be. There isn’t a set way to be involved in the organization. The time commitment also depends on the person, some spend the minimum time needed for FLEG and some do more.

FLEG strives to develop leadership ability and provide leadership opportunities for its members, engineering students, and UF students. Joining this organization will allow you to apply the knowledge acquired from GBMs, your committee, and your events into industry, academia, and other future endeavors. Besides leadership, FLEG also values community, and we strive to provide a safe environment that brings members closer with each other and the University of Florida as a whole.

Yes; social events within the organization are run by the Internal Affairs Committee.

The best part of FLEG for many former members is the relationships that are made during their time in the organization. FLEG can make friends and find mentors that they talk to even after they talk to even after they leave the organization. The mentorship program in FLEG allows for connections among members in the same class and between multiple years of FLEG classes. Make sure to ask SLEG about this at recruitment events for a better answer!

In FLEG, there is a program within the organization that is run by the Internal Affairs Committee called mentorship. Every year, the Internal Affairs directors choose a SLEG mentor for each member of the new FLEG class to be friends with, learn from, and rely on for your first year in FLEG. There is also the mentorship cup that is a competition among mentorship pairs where they do weekly meet-ups and mentorship challenges (go on a hike together, cook together, etc.) to earn the most points and win the cup at the end of the Spring semester.

Committees meet once a week outside of GBMs to plan and execute events for the UF community. Events are usually put on once every month or so. The committees are also a way for FLEG to get to know each other better, as the committee often does activities outside of their meetings.  More details about the individual committees and their past events can be found on our website under the Committees page.

Any major within the College of Engineering as well as Computer Science majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences may apply to FLEG.

FLEG accepts many different types of engineering students. There is no set number of students from each major that we accept into FLEG, and the numbers vary year-by-year.

There are usually about 40 FLEG selected each year, with about 20 active leadership. There are also SLEG (former FLEG) that can still be active without having an official role. There are over 200 FLEG alumni dating back to the start of the organization in 2012.

Each FLEG class will consist of anywhere between 30 and 40 people.

We cannot say who. There will be several people reviewing the application so one person will not have autonomy on whether an individual gets accepted or not.

FLEG doesn’t have a GPA requirement to apply for or stay in the organization.

If you have been admitted and decide that you do not want to pursue an engineering degree, you do not have to leave FLEG. You are still welcome to participate in all FLEG-related matters and apply for Leadership positions and/or run for Executive Board positions. There have been multiple FLEG alumni that have switched to a non-engineering major and have remained involved in the organization.

FLEG is different from other organizations because it creates a sense of camaraderie among the members. The FLEG usually spend several hours a week together, and can form friendships that last throughout college. Additionally, FLEG is designed to develop the leadership skills of those in the club, as opposed to other organizations for which this is not as much of a focus.

The ratio of male-to-female FLEG members varies each year. The FLEG class of 2019 (last year’s FLEG class) had an almost exact 1:1 ratio (21 male and 22 female).

FLEG is fairly diverse, with people coming from all different backgrounds, hometowns, and mindsets.

The most important thing is to stay organized and prioritize! Don’t leave responsibilities to the last minute, because there is a chance you’ll forget or be rushed. Additionally, make sure to know which organizations are your top priority, because eventually you will have conflicting commitments. Finally, make sure to stay on top of your communication with others!

You can send an email to fleg.recruit@gmail.com with any further questions that you have.

Yes; once we have reviewed that every section of the application is complete, we will notify you with a confirmation email.

If a conflict arises in your schedule and you cannot attend a GBM, you will need to fill out an excused absence form with appropriate documentation 24 hours before the start of the GBM.

Some events that FLEG might host are a movie night hosted by the Internal Committee, a coding workshop hosted by the Collegiate Committee, or volunteering at the Humane Society with the Outreach Committee. More examples of events can be found on the website on the committees page.

Transfer students are not allowed to apply for FLEG, unfortunately, as they are not freshmen. However, they are welcome and encouraged to attend events that FLEG hosts!

We accept all engineering majors and Comp Sci in the CLAS. We do not accept UFO, PACE, Santa Fe, Transfer students from another Bachelor’s program, students who started in Spring 2020. We accept first-time in Bachelors program students.

“The Executive Board consists of five positions that primarily focus on FLEG’s long-term vision and goals. They handle the majority of discussions with leadership and usually have the final say on major decisions. Leadership consists of all committee directors. They’re involved in discussions with the executive board and usually give their input on the direction that the organization is going in & the decisions that the Executive Board is making.

At the end of their freshman year, those in FLEG who would like to apply for any number of leadership positions will be considered after filling out an “end of year” Leadership application. These positions are determined by involvement and dedication in the organization.

Before every Spring Semester, Executive Board members are elected by FLEG members in good standing. E-Board nominees must be sophomores. Holding a leadership position is not a requirement to become an Executive Board nominee.
